What is impact and why is it important?
Rosanna Alderson
Impact includes, but is not limited to:
an effect on, change or benefit to the activity,
attitude,
awareness,
behaviour,
capacity,
opportunity,
performance,
policy,
practice,
process or understanding of an audience, beneficiary, community, constituency, organisation or individuals in any geographic location whether locally, regionally, nationally or internationally.
142. Impact includes:
reduction or prevention of harm,
risk,
cost or other negative effects.

'The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Research Councils UK (RCUK) and Universities UK (UUK) have a shared commitment to support and promote a dynamic and internationally competitive research and innovation base that makes an increased and sustainable contribution, both nationally and globally, to economic growth, wellbeing, and the expansion and dissemination of knowledge.'

Reducing the negative impact of volcanic ash clouds on the global economy by minimising airspace closure and optimising ground-level fall forecasts through the incorporation of Lancaster's volcanic ash aggregation research within operational and research Tephra Transport, Dispersal and Deposition Models (TTDDMs).
Impact scope quite narrow- full range of applications and benefactors not fully explored? (From papers- marine sediment, raindrop formation, lightning hazards
, understanding eectrostatics in humid environments, agg of dry particles in planetesmial formation, industry - chimney scrubbers and fluidized beds.

An explicit and clear explaination as to how knowing where ash deposits will be will help airspace closures etc Some technical terms need defining in first instance.

An alternative to citation numbers as a measure of publication impact?

An inclusion of grant funding obtained ?
Could be more specific about the contribution and downstream affects of their data to Fall3D and Ash3D models as well as nature and extent.
Give justification of using empirical data to inform models- but what about future plans to incorporate theory in order to increase accuracy, even if semi- empirically.
More emphasis on the fact that currently, models try to work 'backwards' trying to fit paramterers to data. These scientists are giving more accurate physical property estimates that can be incorporated into models and therefore are more accurate and based on underlying chemical principles.

Details of beneficairies ot very clear for Fall3D

No explicit details of when impacts occured.

No extra sources to corroberate impact - testimonies etc.
Use info to model and understand past eruptions?

Suggested steps (RCUK - example) :
Identify primary and end users?
Rather than collaboration make official partners
Knowledge exhange fellowship ?
50% of projected ash is subject to aggregation
Near field ground deposits underestimated
far atmospheric concentrations
overestimated
General advice from RCUK pathways to impact:

state project specifics and not WHILST
being flexible and considering possible outcomes.
society
Thank you for your attention

'increased and sustainable contribution'...
impact has to be demonstratable...

Relevence to economic impact clearly defined
Some historical context as to precedent of need is exemplified
Dates and contributions are attributed
The measure of publication impact has been corrected for 'old paper bias'
Collaborations and reach with fall3D and Ash3D demonstrated.
