I Sat Where They Sat
Ezekiel 15Then I came to them of the captivity atTelabib, that dwelt by the river ofChebar, andI sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.
Six centuries before Christ, God caused the Jews to be carried away intoBayloniancaptivity. The reason for this was their repeatedIdolatry.During the time ofthe judges,God’s people turned away from him to follow the gods of the nations about them.In the time of thedivided kingdomthey were no better. Few of the kings in the Southern Kingdom were good and none of the kings Of the Northern Kingdom were good. They worshipped the gods of the nations about them. They set up their own high places and worshiped all manner of gods.
God had caused theAssyriansto take the Northern Kingdom into captivity because of their idolatry and nowthe Southern Kingdom was taken into captivity by theBabylonians.Daniel was among those taken into Babylon. His position was he ‘sat in the gate of the king.” (Daniel 2:49)..This would be comparable to being near the White House Today. Being a prophet of God, he was near to and spoke with the king. However, there was another prophet of God in Babylon. This prophet’s name was Ezekiel. He was not around the court of the king. He was God’s spokesman out in the province where the people were.
That connects us to our text today:Ez. 3:15 -21While in Babylon for their sins, Israel had the prophet Ezekiel sitting among them.He could see their plight and understand their feelings. Many times, when people have problems, those about them cannot understand how they feel, why they act or react the way they do, nor even why they do wrong. Problems are no excuse to commit sin. Often people do not take the way of escape provided by the Lord ( I Cor. 10:13)
Ezekiel 3:1-211 Moreoverhe said unto me, Son of man, eat that thoufindest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.2So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.3And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.4And he said unto me, Son of man,GO,get thee unto the house of Israel, andspeak with my words unto them.God called Ezekiel!!
5For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of an hard language, but to the house of Israel;(to God’s people! God’s people need to listen!))6Not to many people of a strange speech and of an hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would have hearkened unto thee.7But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all thehouse of Israel are impudent and hardhearted. Why do people not listen to God?
Houseof Israel are impudent and hardhearted.Impudent:notshowing due respect for another person; impertinent:synonyms:impertinent·insolent·cheeky·cocky·brazen·bold·audacious·presumptuous·forward·disrespectful·insubordinate··brash·brassy·rude·impoliteHardhearted. .incapable of being moved to pity or tenderness; unfeeling.synonyms:unfeeling·heartless·cold·hard·callous·unsympathetic·uncaring·unloving·unconcerned·indifferent·unmoved·unkind·uncharitable·unemotional·cold-hearted
8Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads.9As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.10Moreover he said unto me, Son of man,all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thineheart, and hear withthine ears.(2 things: Heart/Ears!)11And go, get thee to them of the captivity, unto the children of thy people, and speak unto them, and tell them, Thussaiththe LordGod; whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear. (say it anyway!)12Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of theLordfrom his place.
13I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a noise of a great rushing.14So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of theLordwas strong upon me.
ThenI came to them of the captivity atTelabib, that dwelt by the river ofChebar, and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.Cf. Job’s friends…Did not speak for 7 days…they are astonished… (Job 2:1-just as Ezekiel …
Job 2: 11Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place;EliphaztheTemanite, andBildadtheShuhite, andZophartheNaamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and nonespakea word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
16And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of theLordcame unto me, saying,17Son of man, I have made theea watchmanunto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, andgive them warning from me.18When I say unto the wicked,Thou shalt surely die; and thougivesthim not warning, norspeakestto warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life;the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.19Yet ifthou warnthe wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. (Acts 20:26-27)

Acts 20:26WhereforeI take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.27For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
20Again,When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered;but his blood will I require at thine hand.21Nevertheless if thouwarnthe righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, becausehe is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.
Ezekiel “Sat where they sat”1. Sometimes it takes an experience to really driveHome the truth about circumstances in life.2. Ezekiel had to sit where they sat…for 7 days.3. Job’s friends…did about the same thing…for 7 days withoutTalking to Job or saying anything.4. What does this length of time do? Caused Ezekiel andJob’s friends to be astonished…amazed…aware..ofthe circumstances
What do you see when you sit where he sits?
What do you see when you ‘sit where they sit’…your own children! (Eph. 6:4)Parents over children: Some abuse their own children..
What do you see when husbands and wives ‘sit where each other Sit’?…Husband sees what the wife does….. Wife sees what the husband does…
What do you see when you ‘sit where they sit’.?.The Lost, the wicked, and those who have turned away From God?

Long, seemingly no endto the misery that goes with such.A Storm : lost, house/furniture/all your possessionsIn the storm..A Fire…Same thing

Have you ever sat where somewhere else was sitting,…in a funeral home where the family sits?… in a jail house where a friend or family member was imprisoned ?… in a family where there were children abused and neglected?…in the poverty line where people were gathered to get foodunder the bridge among the homeless?
..In a court room where a marriage is about to be dissolved?..In a family room at a hospital where a loved one only hasa few hours to live?…Have you ever sat in a room with a mother with childrenhuddled up to her because their daddy was drunk, and camehome screamingand abusing??.
..With a family who has just been told that their Mom orDaddy has cancer and there is no cure for their condition…..Mr. Tommy at the Grocery store where I would getBanana boxes. Early Jan. told…stage 4…died onFeb. 2… Working up to about 2 weeks before his death.
1. Have you ever sat with people who were grief stricken,Because of some real threat to their lives?2. Have you ever sat with parents whose 20 year old sonjust announced to them that he no longer believes inGod and quits going to church!.3. Have you ever sat with parents who have been told theirdaughter l has just told them that she was gay, and wasleaving to live with another woman?.4. Have you ever sat with old people or young people who have lost theirhome, theirproperty, all their possessions, and now have no place to live?.
7. Have you ever walked into a house where you are bringingsome food from members of the church to a family that, whenYou open the refrigerator door, there really is no food in it…They have nothing.Be careful when you judge others harshly…have you walked inTheir shoes for just one day????
The one thing that I will always remember about Kasey’s sermonsis this: His repeatedly stated:” “ungrateful ,unthankful”Isperhaps the worse sin a person can be guilty of.!Ingratitude is a hurtful sin…No thank you, no appreciationfor what others have done for you. So many of us have not even told God “thank you” for theMany sins we have committed and which God has forgiven us.For the food, shelter and clothing that He has given us….For the fact that we are still living in the best country in theworld..Forfamilies who are loving and caring…who really are helping you.
Have you ever walked in the shoes or had to go bare footedbecause you have no shoes?..How about the handicap…those who can no longer walk.?..How about the blind or those whose eyes are failing them ?....How about those who can no longer hear…or hear veryFaintly…?
Don’t judge others too hard
Pray don’t find fault with the man who limps,Or stumbles along the road;Unless you have worn the shoes he wearsOr struggled beneath his load. There may be tacks in his shoes that hurt,Though hidden away from view,Or the burdens he bears, placed on your back,Might cause you to stumble too.
Don’t sneer at the man who’s down today,Unless you have felt the blowThat caused his fall, or felt the shameThat only the fallen know. You may be strong, but still the blowsThat were his, if dealt to youIn the self-same way at the self-same time,Might cause you to stagger too.
Don’t be too harsh with the man who sins,Or pelt him with words or stones,Unless you are sure, yes, doubly sureThat you have not sins of your own.For you know, perhaps if the tempter’s voiceShould whisper as soft to you,As it did to him when he went astray,‘Twouldcause you to falter too. End
If I have never sat where my brother or sister is sitting, how do I know what I would do under the same set of circumstances?I mayknow what is right and what I should do, but does that mean I would do it? We hope we would do right, no matterThe circumstances. But would we?
Ezekiel “sat where they sat” Ez. 3:15He saw their condition…He knows whatMust be done. Tell them thetruth..andGet them to turn to God.
The bankrupted Christian…Worked 2 and 3 jobs when he could. He could not be at all the services. After losing his wifewho married someone else, he still raised his children, and worked for 25 years. He paid off his debtors…every one and every cent. ..It was Even considered by some in the church, that since he didn’t come to every service, he should bedisfellowshipped. They did not know all Was in the heart of that man. He owed another man or mendebts,Andhe worked and paid them off.
That’s all we are trying to do in preaching the GospelOf Christ.God told Ezekiel to warn the wicked. If you are not aChristian, then you are lost. God tells you what to do:Hear. Rom. 10:17; Believe John 8:24; Repent. Luke 13:3Confess Matt. 10:32-33 and just like Saul was told: AriseAnd be baptized. Acts 22:16If you are a fallen member, repent, confess and pray.Acts 8:22; James. 5:16And be faithful: Rev. 2:10; I Cor. 15:58
