What is the Learning Assistant (LA) Program?
The LA program is an exciting program that involves undergraduate/graduate students in teaching and learning while helping them to improve their teaching, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
LA Program Goals:
To improve student support in undergraduate mathematics courses.To foster active learning environments within the classroom.To provide an opportunity for qualified undergraduate and graduate students to develop leadership, teaching, and group facilitation skills
Responsibilities of a Learning Assistant:
Attend Pre-Semester meetings the week before classes begin.Attend weekly staff meetings for assigned course(s).Participate in 1-2 class sections of assigned course.
Responsibilities of a Learning Assistant:
5-10 hours per week in MRTC teaching labsAttend a Math Education Seminar or LA Focus GroupGrading for assigned classesLead Supplementary Instruction (SI) sessions for assigned course.
Qualifications:
Learning Assistants should:Be skilled in the material for assigned coursesHave in interest in teachingWork well with studentsHave passed or tested out of assigned coursesHavepassed the SLPT or scored a 26 or above on the internet based TOEFL speakingsubtest.Havescored a 26 or above on the internet based TOEFL writing subtest or have scored a 70 on the ELPT.

Timeline:
Applications are due on April 10.Interviews will take place April 13-17.Final decisions will be made by April 21.
